SimulacrumI am brought to life with a clicking of wheels. My chest heaves in song and thin notes die on the air, bursting like dreams. It has been so long.
The door to my simple cage swings open and I roll forward impatiently. I am eager to see who I must serve this time. My own shape changes as I move. I feel nothing, for I am wood and rope and cheap, tinny metal, but I know I now mirror the girl stood before me. She is concealing her amazement. She studies me as intently as I study her. Brown hair, flushed skin, blue eyes. She looks artificial.
I listen as the valet offers an explanation I've have heard many times before. I am a simulacrum a likeness, a copy. I wonder if this girl knows that I was once like her.
I have no choice in the way my arms lift to brush the girl's face with powder. She splutters and blinks through the pink haze towards the mirror that my wooden limbs offer her. Her eyes grow wide; I know not what she sees.
I keep patting on powder, even after the valet has bound

My arrival is unannounced. I do not slip through the door like a late guest or arrive early like a friendless boozer. I am on the arm of someone you already know. I have been invited. I am in the eyes of a half-known stranger. You recognize me, move towards me as if to say hello before realising that you do not quite know my name yet. Not to worry. You will know it soon. I'll make sure of it.
We finally meet. You realise with some discomfort that you do know me. I have bright skin and hair, beguiling eyes and a captivating smile. You know me very well and embarrassment paints your face with a lovely flush. I can feed off that. You shift awkwardly from foot to foot. I wear your memories like a cape, half-curled wisps of smoke caught in a net around my shoulders.
Later, we are alone.
